Record-Breaking Journey

Nasa’s Perseverance rover is on the verge of breaking the record for the longest distance traveled by any vehicle on another planet. The rover, which landed on Mars in February 2021, is expected to exceed 45.16 kilometers (28.06 miles), surpassing the previous record set by the Opportunity rover, which lost contact with NASA in 2018.

Autonomous Navigation

According to Steven Lee, project manager for Perseverance at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the rover’s success is largely due to its advanced auto-navigation system. Equipped with sophisticated cameras, Perseverance captures images of its surroundings, which are processed by an onboard computer to determine the safest path. While Earth-based self-driving cars benefit from detailed maps and road signs, Perseverance navigates the Martian terrain, avoiding obstacles like boulders and sandy slopes without the complications of traffic.

In contrast, the Curiosity rover, which shares similar technology but is equipped with older hardware, has only about 10 percent of its driving done autonomously. Curiosity has covered 38.6 kilometers in its time on Mars, while Perseverance has achieved approximately 90 percent of its distance through autonomous driving, thanks to its modern Vision Compute Element.

Scientific Exploration

Vivian Sun, the mission’s deputy project scientist, emphasizes that Perseverance’s self-driving capability enhances its scientific mission. Unlike Curiosity, which has been methodically climbing Mount Sharp, Perseverance explores Jezero Crater, where its objectives are more dispersed. This mobility allows it to reach new sites ahead of schedule, maximizing scientific output.

In Jezero Crater, the rover is investigating some of the oldest rocks in the Solar System, dating back around 4 billion years. This period is significant as it coincides with the late stages of the heavy bombardment era, when Mars may have had large lakes or oceans. Perseverance’s findings could shed light on the planet’s geological history and its potential to support life.

Durability and Future Prospects

Curiosity continues to operate after nearly 15 years on Mars, and Perseverance is also performing well. Unlike its predecessor, Perseverance features redesigned wheels that show no significant wear. However, there are ongoing evaluations of the wheel actuators, which were initially tested for 20 kilometers of use. NASA is working to certify them for at least 100 kilometers.

Powered by radioisotope thermoelectric generators, Perseverance has no need for propellants or lubricants, allowing it to continue its journey across Mars for years to come.
