Shelley Fabares’ family has shared the details surrounding her passing. The beloved actress, known for her roles in television and film, died from pneumonia after being diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis. She had undergone a liver transplant 26 years prior.
Fabares passed away on August 22 at the age of 82.
A Glimpse into Her Career
Born on January 19, 1944, in Santa Monica, Fabares enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood. She started with guest appearances on various TV shows in the mid-1950s before landing a prominent role on The Donna Reed Show, which featured her in nearly 200 episodes over five seasons from 1958 to 1963. Her film career included several projects with Elvis Presley, after which she returned to television.
Throughout the next two decades, Fabares made guest appearances on numerous series, including The Twilight Zone, The Incredible Hulk, Fantasy Island, and Mork & Mindy. She is also remembered for her role as Brian Piccolo’s wife in the influential 1971 telefilm Brian’s Song.
Her Most Notable Role
Fabares is perhaps best known for her portrayal of Christine Armstrong, the girlfriend and later wife of Craig T. Nelson’s character on the long-running ABC sitcom Coach. Her performance earned her two consecutive Emmy nominations in 1993 and 1994 during the show’s nine-season run.
In her later years, she lent her voice to the character of Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive mother, in various animated series, including Superman: The Animated Series and Justice League.
