Investment Announcement

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry announced on Tuesday that SpaceX will invest $100 billion to establish Starship factories and launch pads along the state’s coast. This ambitious project aims to create a facility similar to the Starbase in Texas but on a larger scale.

The announcement follows months of speculation about SpaceX’s interest in a large tract of land along the Gulf Coast, which is ideal for constructing multiple launch towers and has access to methane propellant, crucial for fueling the Starship rocket.

Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and COO, stated that the proposed “Starbase Louisiana” would be a self-sufficient spaceport featuring propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping capabilities, vehicle processing facilities, and an airport.

Strategic Location

SpaceX’s choice of Louisiana is strategic. To achieve its goal of launching thousands of Starship rockets annually for various missions, the company requires additional launch sites. Currently, SpaceX operates one Starship launch site in Texas and is developing another, with three more under construction in Florida.

However, both the Florida and Texas sites face space limitations. Louisiana offers a competitive advantage, as it has no other private launch companies vying for range access, unlike Florida. Additionally, the available land in Louisiana far exceeds that of Texas, where the Starbase site is confined to about 350 acres.

In Louisiana, SpaceX anticipates having access to approximately 125,000 acres in the Pecan Island area. While this project will encounter environmental challenges, Shotwell assured that only a small portion of the land would be utilized, with efforts to preserve the wetlands for wildlife and recreational activities.

Initial efforts will focus on combating coastal erosion, which is a significant issue in the area, with the state losing one to three meters of land annually. SpaceX plans to collaborate with state and federal agencies to enhance Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan, including the construction of breakwaters to protect the shoreline.

Construction of the first launch facilities is slated to begin in 2027, with an initial launch aimed for 2029.

Additional Benefits

The Louisiana site offers several advantages beyond its size. Its proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway allows for deep-water access, facilitating the transport of rockets and payloads. It is also relatively close to SpaceX’s Starfactory in South Texas.

Moreover, the southward-facing location provides potential access to polar orbits, which differ from equatorial orbits by moving north to south. Most of SpaceX’s planned orbital data center satellites will likely be positioned in near-polar orbits, making Louisiana an ideal launch point.

Officials in Louisiana were first approached by SpaceX about the site six months ago, following a legal settlement that made the land available. The project has progressed rapidly since then.

In addition to the substantial financial investment, SpaceX has committed to creating at least 3,000 local jobs, with the potential for up to 10,000 positions as the company seeks skilled workers for various trades to support the development of the world’s largest rocket.
